The waves like ridges of plowed land are<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> high,
\nWhereat the ship<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> oft stumbling<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> down doth lie.
\nBut in a calm, level as meadows seem,<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nAnd by<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> its saltness makes it look as green.
\nWhen ships thereon a slow, soft pace do<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> walk,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nThen mariners, as shepherds, sing and talk.
\nSome whistle, and some on their pipes do play,
\nAnd thus with mirth they<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> pass their time away.
\nAnd every mast is like a maypole high,
\nRound which they dance, though not so merrily\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 10
\nAs shepherds do when they their lasses bring
\nGarlands to maypoles,<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> tied with silken string.<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nInstead of garlands, they hang on their mast<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nHuge sails, and ropes to tie these<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> garlands fast;<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nInstead of lasses they do dance with Death,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 15
\nAnd for their music they have Boreas\u2019s breath;
\nInstead of wine and wassails, drink salt tears,
\nAnd for their meat they feed on nought but fears.
\nFor flocks of sheep, great shoals of herrings swim;
\nThe whales as ravenous wolves<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> do feed on them.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 20
\nAs sportful kids skip over hillocks green,
\nSo dancing dolphins on the waves are seen.
\nThe porpoise, like their watchful dog, espies,
\nAnd gives them warning when great winds will rise.

\nAbove the waters when they roughly<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> flow,
\nAnd like as men in time of show\u2019ring rain<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span>

\nBut quickly run for shelter to a tree,<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
