Standing upon<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> a hill of fancies high,
\nAnd viewing round<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> with curiosities eye,
\nUnder my thoughts saw<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> several landscapes lie.<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Some champains<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> of delights<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> I saw,<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> did feed
\nPleasures, as wethers fat, and ewes to breed.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nAnd cows of probability, which went<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nIn hope\u2019s green pastures, gave milk of content.<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nSome fields, though plowed with care, unsowed did lie,
\nWanting the fruitful seed of industry;<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nIn other fields, full crops of joys there growed,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10
\nWhere some ripe joys<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> fruition down had mowed;<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nSome blasted with ill accidents looked black,<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nOthers, blown down with sorrow strong, lay flat.<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Then I enclosures viewed, which close did<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span> lie,
\nHearts hedged about with thoughts of secrecy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 15
\nMeadows of youth did pleasant show, and green;<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nInnocency, as cowslips, grew therein.
\nSome ready with old age to cut for hay,
\nSome hay cocked high for Death to take away.
\nClear rivulets of health ran here and there;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 20
\nNo sign<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span> of sickness in them did appear;
\nNo stones or gravel stopped their passage free,
\nNo weeds of pain, or slimy gouts could see.
\nWoods did present my view on the left side,
\nWith<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> trees of high ambition and<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> great pride.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 25
\nThere shades of envy were made of dark spite,
\nWhich did eclipse the fame of honor\u2019s light.
\nFaults stood so close, that but few<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span> beams of praise
\nCould enter in; spite<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> stopped up all the ways.
\nBut leaves of prattling tongues, which ne\u2019er lie still,<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span> \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 30
\nSometimes speak truth, although most lies they tell.<\/span>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Then did I<\/span>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span> a garden of<\/span>27<\/sup><\/a><\/span> beauty view,
\nWhere sweet complexions,<\/span>28<\/sup><\/a><\/span> rose and lily,<\/span>29<\/sup><\/a><\/span> grew.
\nAnd on the banks of breasts most perfect there<\/span>30<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nDid violets of azure veins appear;<\/span>31<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 35
\nLips of fresh gillyflowers grew up high,
\nWhich oft the sun did kiss as he passed by;
\nHands of narcissus showed most perfect white,<\/span>32<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nWhose palms,<\/span>33<\/sup><\/a><\/span> fine tulips, were streaked with delight.<\/span>34<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Close by this gard\u2019n<\/span>35<\/sup><\/a><\/span> a lovely orchard stood,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 40
\nWherein grew<\/span>36<\/sup><\/a><\/span> fruit of pleasure rare and good.
\nAll colored eyes grew there, as bullace gray,
\nAnd damsons black, which do taste best, some say.
\nOthers there were of the pure bluest grape,
\nAnd pear-plum faces, of an oval shape,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 45
\nAnd cheeks<\/span>37<\/sup><\/a><\/span> of apricots made red with heat,
\nAnd cherry lips, which most delight to eat.
\nWhen I had<\/span>38<\/sup><\/a><\/span> viewed this landscape round about,
