This island lived in peace full many a day,
\nSo long as she unto the gods did pray.
\nBut she grew proud with plenty and with ease,
\nAdored herself, and<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> did the gods displease.
\nShe flung their altars down, her own set up,<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nAnd she alone would have divine worship.<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nThe gods grew angry, and commanded Fate
\nTo alter and to ruin quite the state.
\nFor they had changed their mind of late, they said,
\nAnd did repent unthankful man th\u2019had made.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10
\nFates wondered much to hear what said the gods,
\nThat they and mortal men<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> were at great odds,
\nAnd found them apt to change, thought it did show<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nAs if the gods did not poor men foreknow.<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\n\u201cFor why,\u201d said they, \u201cif men do evil grow,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 15
\nThe gods, foreseeing all, men\u2019s hearts did<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> know
\nLong, long before they did man first create;<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nIf so, what need they change or alter fate?
\n\u2019Twas in their pow\u2019r<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> to make them good or ill;
\nWherefore,<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> men cannot do just what they will.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 20
\nThen why do gods complain against them so,
\nSince men are made by them such ways to go?
\nIf evil power hath gods to oppose,
\nTwo<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> equal deities it plainly shows;
\nThe one pow\u2019r cannot keep obedience long,<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 25
\nIf disobedient power<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> be as strong.
\nAnd,<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> being ignorant how men will prove,
\nKnow not<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> how strong or long will last their love.\u201d<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nBut may\u2019t not be the course of gods\u2019 decree<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span>

\nThey from the first a changing power create,<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nAnd for that work make<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> destiny and fate.<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nIt is the mind of man<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> that\u2019s apt to range;
\nThe minds of gods are not subject to change.<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nThen did the Fates unto the planets go,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 35
\nAnd told them they malignity must throw
\nInto this island, for the gods would<\/span>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span> take
\nRevenge on them who did<\/span>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span> their laws forsake.
\nWith that, the planets drew, like<\/span>27<\/sup><\/a><\/span> with a screw,
\nBad vapors from the Earth, and then did view<\/span>28<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 40
\nWhat place to squeeze that poison, in<\/span>29<\/sup><\/a><\/span> which all
\nThe venom was, that\u2019s got from the world\u2019s ball,<\/span>30<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nWhich<\/span>31<\/sup><\/a><\/span> through men\u2019s veins, like molten lead, it came,
\nAnd did like oil their spirits all inflame,<\/span>32<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nWhere malice boiled with rancor, spleen, and spite.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 45
\nIn war and fraud, injustice took delight,
\nThinking which way their lusts they might fulfill,<\/span>33<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nCommitted thefts, rapes, murthers at their will;<\/span>34<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nParents and children did unnat\u2019ral grow,<\/span>35<\/sup><\/a><\/span>

\nReligious men were thought to be stark mad;
\nIn witches, wizards they did<\/span>38<\/sup><\/a><\/span> put their trust;
\nExtortions, bribes were thought to be most just;

\nBlasphemous words against high Heaven throws.<\/span>40<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nThe gods<\/span>41<\/sup><\/a><\/span> in rage unbound<\/span>42<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the winds to<\/span>43<\/sup><\/a><\/span> blow
\nIn foreign nations,<\/span>44<\/sup><\/a><\/span> formerly their foe.
\nWhere they did plant themselves, no Britons live,<\/span>45<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nFor why the gods their lives and land them give.<\/span>46<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 60
\nCompassion wept, and Virtue wrung her hands
\nTo see that right was banished from their lands.
\nThus winds and seas, the planets, fates, and all
\nConspired to work her ruin and her fall.
\nBut those that keep the laws of God on high\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 65
\nShall live in peace, in graves shall quiet lie.<\/span>47<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nAnd ever after like the gods shall be,
