Women and fools fear in the dark to be,
\nLest they<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the Devil in some shape should see.
\nAs if, like silly owls, he takes<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> delight
\nTo sleep all day, and go<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> abroad at Night,
\nTo beat the pots and pans, candles<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> blow out, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nAnd all the night to<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> keep a revel-rout,
\nTo<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> make the sow to grunt, the pigs to squeak,
\nThe dogs to bark, cats mew as if they speak.
\nAlas, poor Devil, whose power is<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> small,
\nOnly to make a cat or dog to bawl,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 10
\nTo make with pewter, tin, and brass<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> a noise,
\nTo stew with fearful sweat poor girls and boys.
\nWhy should we fear him, since he doth no harm?
\nFor we may bind him fast within a charm.
\nThen what a devil ails a woman old, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 15
\nTo play such tricks whereby her soul is sold?<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nCan he destroy mankind, or new worlds make,
\nOr alter states for an old woman\u2019s sake?
\nOr put daylight out,<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> or stop the sun,

\nAnd yet methinks \u2019tis odd, and very strange,
\nThat since the Devil<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> cannot bodies change
\nHe should have<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> power over souls, to draw
\nThem from their God, and from his holy law,

\nDestroying honesty, disgracing truth,
