My dwelling is a low thatched house,<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> my cell
\nNot<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> big enough for pride\u2019s great heart to dwell.
\nMy rooms are not of<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> stately cedars built,
\nNo marble chimney-piece, nor<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> wainscot gilt,
\nNo statues cut, or carved, or<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> cast in brass,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nWhich, had they life, would Nature\u2019s art surpass,
\nNor<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> painted pictures which Appelles drew;
\nThere\u2019s nought but lime and hair homely<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> to view.
\nNo agate table with a tortoise frame,
\nNor stools stuffed with birds\u2019 feathers, wild or tame,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10
\nBut a stump of an old decay\u00e8d tree,
\nAnd stools that have<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> three legs, and half lame be,<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nCut with a hatchet from some broken boughs,
\nAnd this is all which poverty allows.

\nNot like the rich, who guests do<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> entertain
\nWith cruelty, when birds and beasts<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> are slain,
\nWho oil their bodies with their melted grease,
\nAnd by their flesh their body\u2019s fat increase.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 20
\nWe need no cook, nor skill to dress our meat,
\nFor Nature dresses most of what we eat,
\nAs roots and herbs, not such as art doth sow,

\nThus by their luxury their life they waste;

\nNone happy is, but in a low desire.
\nTheir longings do run out, and fix<\/span>29<\/sup><\/a><\/span> nowhere;
\nFor what they have, or can have, nought they<\/span>30<\/sup><\/a><\/span> care,
\nBut long for what they have not, this th\u2019admire,<\/span>31<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
