Riches
\n<\/strong>I, Wealth, can make all men of each degree
\nTo crouch and flatter, and to follow me.
\nI many cities build, high, thick, and large,
\nAnd armies raise, against each other charge.
\nI make them lose<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> their lives for my dear sake,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nThough when they\u2019re dead they no rewards can take.
\nI trample truth under my golden feet,
\nAnd tread down innocence, that flower sweet.
\nI gather beauty when \u2019tis newly blown,

\nI root out virtue with a golden spade;
\nI cut off justice with a golden blade.
\nPride and ambition are my vassals low,
\nAnd on their heads I tread as I do go.

Poverty
\n<\/strong>Riches, thou art a slave, and runn\u2019st about
\nOn every errand; thou com\u2019st<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> in, go\u2019st<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> out.
\nAnd men of honor set on thee no price
\nTheir<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> honesty or<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> virtue to<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> entice.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 20
\nSome foolish gamesters, which do love to play
\nAt cards and dice, corrupt perchance you may,
\nA silly virgin gather here and there,

\nPerchance may seek and love your company.
\nAnd those that strive to please their senses all,

\nOn age, \u2019tis true, you have a great, strong power,

Riches
\n<\/strong>You speak, poor poverty, mere out of spite,
\nBecause there\u2019s none with you doth take delight.
\nIf you into man\u2019s company will thrust,
\nThey call that fortune ill, and most accurst.

\nYou are so ragged, torn, and so unclean.
\nWhen I come in, much welcome do I find;
\nGreat joy there is, and mirth in every mind.

Poverty
\n<\/strong>\u2019Tis prodigality you brag so on,
\nWhich never lets you rest till you are gone,
\nCalls in for help to beat you of doors,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 45
\nHis dear companions, drunkards, gamesters, whores.
\nWhat though you\u2019re brave, and gay in outward show?

\nBesides, debauchery is like a sink,
