Both Love and Hate fell in a great dispute,
\nAnd hard it was each other to confute,
\nWhich did most good, or evil most did<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> shun.
\nAt last with frowning brows Hate thus<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> begun:<\/p>\n

Hate
\n<\/strong>\u201cI fly,\u201d said she, \u201cfrom wicked and base acts,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nAnd tear the bonds unjust,<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> ill contracts.
\nI do abhor all murder, war, and strife,
\nInhumane actions and disordered life,
\nUngrateful and unthankful minds that shun
\nAll those from whom they have received a boon.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10
\nFrom discords harsh and rude<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> my ears I stop,
\nAnd what is bad I from the good do lop.
\nI perjured lovers brand with foul disgrace,
\nAnd from ill objects do I hide my face.
\nThings, that are bad I hate, or what seems so,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 15
\nBut Love is contrary to this, I know.
\nLove loves ambit\u00efon, the<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> mind\u2019s hot fire,
\nWould ruin worlds only<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> to rise up higher.
\nYou love to please your appetite and<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> will,
\nTo glut your gusto you delight in still.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 20
\nYou love to flatter, and be flattered too,
\nAnd, for your lust, poor virgins would undo.
\nYou love the ruin of your foes to see,

\nSaid Hate was false, and always did amiss.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 30
\nFor she did cankerfret, the soul destroy,
\nDisturb the pleasure wherein life takes joy,
\nRuin the world with wars, which peace would make,<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nTorment the head and<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> heart, revenge to take.<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nShe<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> never rests till she descends to Hell,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 35
\nFor she amongst the devils loves to<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> dwell.

\nAll music was invented for my sake.
\nI men by laws in commonwealths do join,
\nAnd \u2019gainst<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> a common foe do them<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span> combine.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 40
\nTo th\u2019sick, lame, weak, and ag\u00e8d I\u2019m a friend;<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nI watch, guard, keep, and do them safe defend.<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nFor<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> honor\u2019s sake I do high<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> courage raise,
\nAnd bring to Beauty\u2019s<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span> shrine off\u2019rings<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> of praise.
\nCompassion\u2019s bowels I<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the world throughout\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 45
\nDo carry, and distribute all about.
\nI to the Gods show rev\u2019rence,<\/span>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span> bow and pray,
\nAnd in their heav\u2019nly<\/span>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span> mansions bear great sway.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thus Love and Hate in some things equal be,
