Wit
\n<\/strong>Mixed rose and lily, why are you so proud,
\nSince fair is not in all minds like<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> allowed?
\nSome do like<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> black, some<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> brown, and some like<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> white;
\nIn all complexions some eyes<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> take delight.
\nNor doth one Beauty in the world still reign,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nFor Beauty is created in the brain.
\nBut say there were a body perfect made,
\nComplexion pure, by Nature\u2019s pencil laid,
\nA countenance where all sweet spirits meet,
\nA hair that\u2019s thick and<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> long, curled to the feet,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10
\nYet were it like a statue made of stone,
\nThe eye would weary grow to look thereon.<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nHad it not<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Wit the mind still to delight,
\nIt soon would<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> weary be, as well as sight.
\nFor Wit is fresh and new, doth sport and play,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 15
\nAnd runs about the humour every way.
\nWith all the passions Wit can well agree;
\nWit tempers them and makes them pleased to be.
\nWit\u2019s ingenious,<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> doth new inventions find,
\nTo ease the body, recreate<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the mind.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 20<\/p>\n

Beauty
\n<\/strong>When I appear, I strike the optic nerve;
\nI wound the heart; I<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> make the passions serve.
\nSouls are my pris\u2019ners,<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> yet love me so well,<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nMy company is Heaven,<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> my absence Hell.
\nEach knee doth bow to me, as to a shrine,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 25
\nAnd all the world accounts me as divine.<\/p>\n

Wit
\n<\/strong>Beauty, you cannot long devotion keep:
\nThe mind grows weary; senses fall asleep.<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nAs those which in the house of God do go
\nAre very zealous in a prayer or two,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 30
\nBut if they kneel an hour long<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span> to pray,
\nTheir zeal grows cold, nor know they what they say.
\nSo admirations are: they do not last;<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nAfter nine days the greatest wonder\u2019s past.<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nThe mind, as<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> senses all, delights in change;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 35
\nThey nothing love but what is new and strange.
\nBut subtle Wit can please both<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> long and well,
\nFor to the ear a new tale Wit<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span> can tell.
\nAnd for the taste, doth dress meat<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> several ways
\nTo please the eye, new<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span> forms and fashions raise.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 40
\nAnd for the touch, Wit spins both silk and wool,
\nInvents new ways to keep touch warm and cool.
\nFor scent, Wit mixtures and compounds doth make,
\nThat still the nose a fresh new smell may take.
\nI by discourse can represent the mind\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 45
\nWith several objects, though the eyes be blind.
\nI can create ideas in the brain,<\/span>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nWhich to the<\/span>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span> mind seem real, though but feigned.
\nThe mind like to a shop of toys I fill<\/span>27<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
