Earth
\n<\/strong>O cruel Cold, to life an enemy,<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nA misery to man and<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> posterity!<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nMost envious Cold, to stupify man\u2019s<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> brain,
\nDestroys<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> that monarchy where wit should reign.
\nTyrant thou art,<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and make<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the waters clear \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nIn chains of ice lie fettered half the year,
\nImprisoning each<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> thing that dwells in me,
\nShutting my porous doors, no light to<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> see.
\nI<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> smothered am, and almost at death\u2019s door;<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nEach hole is stopped and I can breathe no more,<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 10
\nCongeal<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the air to massy clouds of snow,
\nAnd like great mountains<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> on my body throw.
\nAnd all my plants and strong, great, fruitful trees
\nYou nip to death, or clothe them in coarse frieze.
\nMy fresh green robes, which make me fine and gay,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 15
\nYou strip me of, or change to black or gray.
\nFor fear of cold, my moisture shrinks so low
\nMy head wears bald; no hair thereon will grow.
\nYou break the sunbeams, do<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> their heat destroy,
\nWhich takes<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> away my comfort and my joy. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 20
\nYou make my body stiff, and numb it so<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span>

Cold
\n<\/strong>Why do you thus complain, poor Earth, and grieve?
\nI give you strength and make you long to live.
\nI do refresh<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span> you from the scorching sun;<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 25
\nI give you breath, which makes you strong become.<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nI clothe you from the cold with milk-white snow,
\nSend down your sap to nourish you below.
\nIf heat with you<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span> should dwell, and long time stay,
\nHis thirst would drink your moisture all away.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 30
\nI take nought from you, nor do make you poor,
\nBut, like a husband good, do keep your store.
\nMy ice are locks and bars, all safe to keep;

\nHeat spends your spirits, makes you cracked and dry,
\nDrinks all himself; with thirst you almost die.
\nWith sweating labor<\/span>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span> you grow weak and faint\u2014

Earth
\n<\/strong>Both heat and cold, in each<\/span>28<\/sup><\/a><\/span> extreme degree,
\nTwo hells they are, though contrary they be.
\nTwo devils they are,<\/span>29<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and vex<\/span>30<\/sup><\/a><\/span> me with great pains;
