Moisture to Earth<\/strong><\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nThere\u2019s none hath such an enemy as I;
\nThe sun doth drink me up when he is<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> dry;
\nHe sucks me out of every hole I lie,<\/p>\n

Draws me up high, from whence I down do fall
\nIn showers of rain; I\u2019m<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> broke in pieces small, \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 5
\nWhere I am forced to Earth<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> for help to call.<\/p>\n

Straight Earth her porous doors sets<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> open wide,
\nAnd takes<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> me in with haste on every side,
\nThen joins<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> my limbs fast in a flowing tide.<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Earth to Moisture
\n<\/strong>Alas, dear friend,<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the sun\u2019s<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> my greatest foe, \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 10
\nDoth blast my tender buds<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> as they do grow.
\nHe burns my face and makes it parched and dry;
\nHe sucks my breast, and<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> starves my young thereby.
\nThus I and all my young for thirst were slain,
\nBut that with wet you fill my breast again.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 15<\/p>\n

Air to Earth and Moisture
\n<\/strong>The sun doth use me ill, as all the rest,
\nFor his hot sultry beams<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> do me molest,
\nMelts me into a thin and flowing flame,
\nTo make him light when men it day do name.
\nCorrupts me, makes me full of plaguey sores, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 20
\nWhich<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> putrefaction on men\u2019s bodies pours,
\nOr else with subtile<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> flame into men\u2019s spirits run,<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nWhich makes them raging or stark mad become.<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nDraws me into a length and breadth, till I
\nBecome so thin, with windy wings do fly. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 25
\nHe never leaves,<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span> till all my spirits\u2019re<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span> spent,
\nAnd then I die, and leave no monument.<\/p>\n

The Sun to Earth
\n<\/strong>O most unkind and most ungrateful Earth!<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nI am thy midwife, bring thy<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> young to birth;
\nI with my heat do cause thy<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span> young to grow,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 30
\nAnd with my light I teach them how to go.
\nMy shining beams<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> are strings whereon to hold,
\nFor fear they fall and break their limbs on cold.
\nAll to maturity I<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span> bring, and give
\nYouth, beauty, strength, and make old age to live.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 35<\/p>\n

The Sun to Water
\n<\/strong>Dull moisture I do light and active<\/span>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span> make,
\nAnd from it all corrupt, gross humours<\/span>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span> take.
\nAll superfluities<\/span>27<\/sup><\/a><\/span> I dry up clean,
\nThat nothing but pure crystal water\u2019s<\/span>28<\/sup><\/a><\/span> seen.
\nThe hardbound cold I loosen and untie, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 40
\nWhen you in icy chains<\/span>29<\/sup><\/a><\/span> a prisoner lie.
\nYour limbs when nipped with frost<\/span>30<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and bit with cold,
\nYour smooth and glassy face grows<\/span>31<\/sup><\/a><\/span> wrinkled, old.
\nI<\/span>32<\/sup><\/a><\/span> make you nimble, soft, and fair,
\nLiquid, and nourishing,<\/span>33<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and debonair.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 45<\/p>\n

The Sun to Air
\n<\/strong>Air I do<\/span>34<\/sup><\/a><\/span> purge, and make it clear and bright,
\nBlack clouds dissolve, which make the day seem night.
\nThe crude, raw vapors I digest and strain,
\nThe thicker part all into showers of rain.
\nThe thinnest part I turn all into wind,<\/span>35<\/sup><\/a><\/span> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 50
\nWhich, like a broom, sweeps out all dirt it finds.<\/span>36<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nThe clearest part I turn to<\/span>37<\/sup><\/a><\/span> azure sky,
