Man
\n<\/strong>\u2019Tis<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> strange,
\nHow we do change.<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nFirst to live, and then to die,
\nIs a great<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> misery.<\/p>\n

To give us sense, great<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> pains to feel!<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 5
\nTo make<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> our lives to be<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Death\u2019s wheel,<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nTo give us sense and reason too,<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nYet know not what we\u2019re made to do.<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nWhether to atoms turn, or to Heav\u2019n<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> fly,
\nOr change into new forms<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and never die, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10
\nOr else to matter prime to<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> fall again,
\nThence<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> take new forms, and so always<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> remain.
\nNature gives no such knowledge to mankind,
\nBut strong desires to torment the<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> mind,
\nAnd senses, which like hounds do run about, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 15
\nYet never can the perfect truth find out.
\nO Nature\u2014Nature!\u2014<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span>cruel to mankind,
\nGives knowledge none, but misery to find.<\/p>\n

Nature
\n<\/strong>Why doth mankind complain and make such moan?<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nMay not I work my will with what\u2019s my own? \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 20
\nBut men amongst<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span> themselves contract and make
\nA bargain for my tree; that tree they<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> take,
\nWhich<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> cruelly they<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span> chop in pieces small,
\nAnd form<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> it as they<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span> please, then build<\/span>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span> withal,
\nAlthough that tree by me was made to stand<\/span>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 25
\nJust as it grows, not to be cut by man.<\/span>27<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Man
\n<\/strong>O Nature,<\/span>28<\/sup><\/a><\/span> trees are dull and have no sense,
\nAnd therefore feel no<\/span>29<\/sup><\/a><\/span> pain, nor take offense.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nature
\n<\/strong>But beasts have life and sense, and passions<\/span>30<\/sup><\/a><\/span> strong,<\/span>31<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nYet cruel man doth kill, and doth them wrong. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 30
\nTo take that life I gave before the time<\/span>32<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nI did ordain, the injury is mine.<\/span>33<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Man
\n<\/strong>What ill man doth, Nature did make him do,<\/span>34<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nFor<\/span>35<\/sup><\/a><\/span> he by Nature is prompt thereunto.
\nFor it was in great Nature\u2019s power and will \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 35
\nTo make him as she pleased, either good<\/span>36<\/sup><\/a><\/span> or ill.
\nThough beasts have<\/span>37<\/sup><\/a><\/span> sense, feel<\/span>38<\/sup><\/a><\/span> pain, yet whilst they live,
\nThey reason want for to dispute or grieve.
\nBeasts have<\/span>39<\/sup><\/a><\/span> no pain but what in sense doth lie,
\nNor troubled thoughts to think how they shall die. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 40
\nReason doth stretch man\u2019s mind upon the rack,
\nWith hopes and<\/span>40<\/sup><\/a><\/span> joys pulled up, with fear pulled back.
\nDesire whips him forward, makes him run;<\/span>41<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nDespair doth wound, and pulls him back again.
\nFor Nature, thou mad\u2019st man betwixt extremes, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 45
\nWants perfect knowledge, yet<\/span>42<\/sup><\/a><\/span> thereof he dreams.
\nFor had he been like to a stock or stone,
\nOr like a beast, to live with sense alone.
\nThen might he eat, or<\/span>43<\/sup><\/a><\/span> drink, or lie stone-still,<\/span>44<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nNe\u2019er troubled be, neither for Heav\u2019n nor<\/span>45<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Hell.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 50
\nMan knowledge hath enough for to inquire,
\nAmbition great enough for to aspire.
\nHe hath this knowledge: that<\/span>46<\/sup><\/a><\/span> he knows not all,

\nWhich makes him wonder, and think there are mixed<\/span>48<\/sup><\/a><\/span> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 55
\nTwo several qualities in nature fixed.
\nThe one like love, the other like to hate,
\nAnd<\/span>49<\/sup><\/a><\/span> striving both they do shut out wise fate.<\/span>50<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nAnd then sometimes, man thinks as one they be,

\nYet all is ruled and govern\u00e8d by Fate.
\nThese are man\u2019s fears; man\u2019s hopes run smooth and high,
\nWho<\/span>53<\/sup><\/a><\/span> thinks his mind is some great deity.
\nFor though the body is of low degree, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 65
\nIn sense like beasts, their souls<\/span>54<\/sup><\/a><\/span> like gods shall be.
