Acknowledgments on Behalf of the Office of the Dean

Michael Lettieri, Vice-Dean, Undergraduate, University of Toronto Mississauga

At the close of the conference, we are left with ample food for thought. This has been a truly wonderful exchange: two full days that have entertained us with insightful, original lectures appealing to both the mind and, of course, the palate. In listening to the numerous papers that were presented, we have been richly nourished and intellectually edified.

I am certain that you enjoyed these two days at our campus. For those of you that have visited the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) in the past, you know just how wonderful of a campus it truly is. UTM sits on 225 acres of land and is by itself larger than five of Ontario’s independent universities. Having first opened its doors in September of 1967 to approximately 150 first-year students, enrolment has increased significantly since then. The past two decades have been a particularly exciting time for the campus—as of today, UTM is home to over fourteen thousand full-time and part-time students attending both undergraduate and graduate classes across fifteen academic departments and two institutes. With its excellent programs, state-of-the-art research, and first-rate facilities, it is clear that UTM is poised for an even greater, brighter future in the years to come.

The Department of Language Studies has long been one of the crown jewels of our campus, all thanks to a committed faculty, a dedicated staff, a rigorous and well-implemented curriculum, and, of course, the excellent students that continue to enrol in its programs. On behalf of the Office of the Dean, I would like to express my thanks to the Department for organizing this conference, as well as to everyone who participated. It goes without saying that an event like this can only come about through the hard work of many extraordinary people: in primis, Teresa Lobalsamo, Adriana Grimaldi, and their organizing committee; Emmanuel Nikiema, Chair of the Department; all of the faculty, staff, and students in the Department of Language Studies; the list of our very impressive speakers, who have travelled from both near and far to be with us today; and finally our sponsors and collaborators from inside and outside the university. I would like to extend a special thank you to the Office of the Vice-Principal (Research), UTM, and likewise for the support of the Italian Consulate General of Toronto and the Italian Cultural Institute of Toronto for taking time out of their busy schedules to be here with us this weekend. The Office of the Dean is grateful to everyone, individually and as a team, for coming together to make this event an astounding success.
